17 HMR History
17 HMR ammo rimfire cartridges were developed in 2002, based on the design of .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire. Hornady teamed up with Ruger and Marlin and decided that necking down the .22 Magnum case to accept a .17 caliber bullet was the best way to create a smaller, faster projectile. By 2004, CCI, Federal, and Remington were producing 17 HMR ammo rounds. 17 HMR ammo’s availability can’t be beaten. Its introduction led firearms manufacturers, such as Savage, CZ, Browning and Mossberg to produce 17 HMR bolt-action rifles.
17 HMR Ammo Performance
Cartridges of 17 HMR ammo boast a muzzle velocity around 2,500 feet per second, with a muzzle energy of 245 foot-pounds. It features a .172-inch bullet diameter that weighs either 1.1 or 1.3 grains, depending on type. The cartridge has a .19-inch neck. The shoulder of the 17 HMR ammo cartridge is .238 inches, the same as the base. It extends to .286 inches at the rim. Overall, the cartridge is 1.349 inches.
